Karwar: As water in the Kadra reservoir is just half a feet below the maximum mark, around 500 cusec water was released from the Kadra reservoir to Kali river on an experimental basis on Thursday.

With the inflow to the reservoir increasing, water was released for around an hour. As per Chief Engineer Ninganna of Kali Hydropower Project, the release of water on an experimental basis helps in alerting the villages along the river bank.

On the other hand, inflow to Kodasalli reservoir increased and the water-level reached the maximum level.

As a result, 0.2 tmcft water was released to Kali river.

As that water reached the Kadra reservoir, officers expected that the Kadra  reservoir would also fill upto the brim on Thursday afternoon.

Various officers including Tahsildar R V Gatti visited the Kadra dam and inspected the situation. It was then decided to release the water from the reservoir after 12 hours. An announcement in this regard was also made through loudspeakers in the villages in the vicinity.

In the afternoon, the rain took some break and this reduced the inflow to Kodasalli and Kadra reservoirs.

Therefore, the officials decided not to release water from Kadra into Kali river.

Agri activities

Torrential rain in Karwar taluk for the past two days has given momentum to agriculture activities.

Following a delay in onset of monsoon this year, farmers have begun preparing their lands now.

Most of the farmers in Devalmakki, Siddar, Nage, Kove, Keravadi and other areas follow the traditional system of agriculture even today. Hence, they are busy ploughing their lands with the help of oxen.

Most of the water bodies in Karwar taluk had dried up in summer this year. But with the area receiving good rain now, most of the water bodies are brimming with water.

As Mallapur, Keravadi, Anshi and surrounding areas are receiving rain continuously, most of the water bodies in the area are flowing in full swing. This has enthused farmers to take up farming.

In Bhatkal

Due to heavy rain on Thursday, several wall collapse incidents were witnessed in Bhatkal taluk.

Such incidents with loss of property were reported at Kaikini, Mundalli and Tengingundi.
