Minister R V Deshpande inaugurates Kapu’s multi-purpose cyclone shelter home

Mangaluru: Revenue Minister R V Deshpande on Tuesday inaugurated a multi-purpose cyclone shelter set up as part of National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project funded by World Bank, at Padu near Kapu in the district.

The unit set up on the premises of a government school at a cost of `2.45 crore will provide shelter to people displaced during natural calamities. Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the cyclone that hit Odisha in the year 1999 has taught us a lesson and has led to strengthening of the rescue and rehabilitation works d u r i n g n a t u r a l calamities.

He said such cyclone shelters are being constructed in all three coastal districts of the state and have been funded jointly by the Centre and the state. These shelters can be used by people during emergencies. During normal times, the building will double up as a school.

Further, the minister said that in order to quickly evacuate people from dangerous areas during natural calamities, 45 kilometres of roads are being constructed along the coast. The reduction of Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) from 200 metres to 50 metres will also prevent the inconvenience caused to people.

The minister said a mini vidhana soudha has been sanctioned for the newly-formed Kapu taluk and the construction works will start soon.

Parliamentary secretary to chief minister Ivan D’Souza, Deputy Commissioner Hepshiba Rani Korlapati and others were present.

Another sub-division

The revenue minister said a revenue sub-division will be set up with Udupi as headquarters soon. At present, the district has just one revenue sub-division. The state government has taken note of the inconvenience caused to people because of this, he said.
