Bhatkal: The residents of Asarkeri and Sonarkeri areas in Bhatkal, protested against the conversion of a Sonarkeri Government Residential school into COVID-19 center, and demanded that the Corona patients should not be accommodated in this school.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the school when the ambulance carrying Corona patients reached there. Representing the people of the area, Krishna Naik and Venkatesh Naik of Asarkeri reached the spot and urged the Tahsildar, Assistant Commissioner and Assistant SP that the area is residential, there are government offices around the school and it is located in the heart of the city. They asked that the Corona patients should not be kept here. Also they said, when the school was being converted into a quarantine center, we had raised our voices and requested not to quarantine here, but now, corona positive patients are being kept which is never acceptable. There was no policeman outside the school, people who were here in quarantine, their relatives used to visit them without any restrictions, now Corona positive people are kept here. People will now continue to visit their relatives here as well, which may further spread Corona in the area, they said.

Responding to the protesters, Assistant Commissioner Mr. Bharat and Assistant SP Mr. Nikhil assured that they would ensure all possible security measures by deploying a full bus of polices here and no one would be allowed in or out the quarantine centre. "Only Corona patients who do not have any symptoms of Corona are being kept here, if any one is found having symptoms, they would be rushed to Government Hospital or Karwar District Hospital if required", said AC Mr. Bharath.

While discussions were underway between the protesters and taluka administration officials, the ambulance carrying the patients of Corona was parked outside the school. After a long wait, when the administration managed to convince the protesters, the ambulance was allowed to enter the school compound.
