Udupi: Pay compensation to flood victims, says ZP project director

Udupi: Due to the recent heavy rainfall, agriculture and horticulture crops and houses have been damaged in the district and the damage estimate report submitted by the village accountants should be submitted by the revenue department officials to the government soon, said Zilla Panchayat Project Director M Babu to officials.

Compensation should be ensured for the victims at the earliest, he added. 

Speaking at the general meeting held at the Taluk Panchayat, he said that due to the flood, crops have been damaged.

In this regard, he advised the agriculture department officials that more farmers should be covered by crop insurance to avoid the burden of loss.

The number of labourers who climb coconut trees in the district has increased and they should get the benefit of the insurance scheme. By paying Rs 99 per annum, the dependents will get an insurance amount of Rs 5 lakh in case of death due to a fall while climbing a coconut tree he said and added that awareness should be created about the insurance.

He said this time, emphasis has been placed on the improvement of the education sector and more funds have been earmarked for the construction of smart classrooms and libraries.

He explained that a model library is being constructed in the Bommarabettu village panchayat at a cost of 15 lakhs.

M Babu who is also the Taluk Panchayat administrator directed the officials to ensure that funds released for development works do not return back to the government.

There is a need for the construction of a burial ground in the village and a report should be submitted for identifying the sites for construction of the burial ground, he said.

There are complaints from the public that they are not accepting applications for new BPL cards and they are not getting new ration cards which should be verified, he added.

He said that the benefit of Netra Jyoti Camp should reach more beneficiaries.
