Mangaluru: A few PU colleges run by Muslims in Dakshina Kannada, have requested the department of pre-university education to allow them an extra intake of 20 students for select subject combinations. As a result of the hijab row, all these institutions have seen a rush in admissions this academic year.

According to officials aware of the development, these institutions never had such requests all these years, but due to a sudden increase in admissions due to the hijab row, they have demanded to allow 20 more students to be admitted this academic year. There are about 30 unaided PU colleges run by Muslims in the district. Unaided PU colleges can admit 80 students per section, in each combination. It can be increased to 100, with an extra 20 seats.

A source added that the I PU admissions are still in progress, and so far, they have received requests from 14 unaided PU colleges, to allow more intake. Among the 14, four colleges belong to Muslims. The numbers are likely to go up in the coming days, since the admission process is still on. “In the past, these PU colleges, which have demanded extra seats, used to find it difficult to fill their normal allocated seats. However, as the hijab rule is in force in government and other aided colleges, many Muslim girls are comfortable taking admission in colleges run by their community,” the source added.

Another source said that a lot of Muslim girls who completed their I PU education in private colleges that have the uniform rule in force, have transferred to Muslim minority PU colleges.

C D Jayanna, DDPU, Dakshina Kannada, said that the department is considering the request of colleges, whenever they send proposals demanding an additional number of seats.

PU college granted permission to start courses

Officials said that a few days ago, permission has been granted to another Muslim minority PU college in Gerukatte, to start courses. “In Dakshina Kannada, this year a total 14 institutions have applied to start PU colleges. Among them, 13 institutions belong to Muslims. So far, we have permitted three institutions to start PU colleges. Among them, two are run by Muslims. The other 11 colleges are in various stages of obtaining permission,’’ said a PU department official.
