Healthy woman dies two days after delivery in Bhatkal, family demands probe

Bhatkal: In a shocking case, a woman died suddenly at Bhatkal government hospital on Thursday, only two days after giving birth to a baby girl. Following the death, the family members have accused the hospital administration of negligence and demanded a probe.

Expressing deep anguish over the incident, hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital, demanding a probe in the matter as the woman was said to be in healthy condition. In view of this, the body of the woman was taken to Manipal KMC hospital for post mortem.

The deceased maternal woman is identified as Malathi Sudhakar Achari, aged 32, a resident of Shiroor, 7kms away from Bhatkal. She was staying at her in-laws house at Mundalli village in Bhatkal.

According to the information received, Malathi was admitted to the government hospital for delivery. On October 29, she gave birth to a baby girl. The doctors of the hospital have confirmed that the baby is healthy.  But two days later, passed away suddenly. Following the incident, the environmentin the hospital campus was tense for a while.

On receiving the information, Bhatkal police sub-inspector Hanumanth Kudgunti and Crime branch sub-inspector Lakkappa along with their teams rushed to the spot and brought situation under control. The exact cause of death is not yet known, but it is being speculated that either shortage of nurses in the hospital or excessive bleeding might have caused the death.

Family members have demanded a thorough investigation. In this regard, a case was registered at Bhatkal town police station. After which, the body was taken to Manipal hospital for post mortem.

Explaining the incident, Medical Officer at Bhatkal Government Hospital, Dr Savita Kamat, said that the woman had given birth to a baby girl two days ago through operation. She said that it is impossible to explain right now about the death of a healthy woman, but can be expected to be known after a post-mortem report.

Speaking about the matter, SI Kudgunti said that the body has been shifted to Manipal for post mortem. After receiving the post mortem report, the next action will be initiated.

  • MLA visits hospital:

As the news of the death of the woman spread, Bhatkal MLA Sunil Naik arrived at the hospital and called on the woman's family members to work patiently in this regard. He said that the exact cause of death would be ascertained through the post-mortem.
