Mangaluru: Mentally ill man arrested for injuring women staffers with sickle

Mangaluru:  City police Monday arrested a person for injuring three women at a training centre.

The accused has been identified as Naveen, who is working as a peon at Kundapur taluk office.

Since 2012 he has been under serious mental illness and has been undergoing treatment in one of the reputed hospitals in Udupi, Mangaluru Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said.

The injured have been identified as Reena, Gunavathi and Nirmala, and are employed at the District Institute for Education and Training, he said.

At about 12.45 pm, a person aged about 30 years entered the institute and enquired about one of the women staffers, Kumar said.
The accused introduced himself as an old student and when he realised that the woman was not present, he took a sickle out of a bag which he was carrying and assaulted three women staffers, Kumar said.

After assaulting, the accused tried to escape, but the people present there apprehended him with the help of jail personnel, who were on duty in the neighbourhood prison, he said.

The injured have been shifted to two different hospitals and are out of danger, Kumar said.

The accused will be produced before the court and necessary action will be taken, he said.
