Bhatkal: Indian Coast Guard ship Rajdoot on Wednesday rescued 23 crew members on board a fishing vessel that had gone off course due to engine failure on Tuesday. The incident was reported to the coastal security police at Bhatkal that gave the vessel’s position some 30 nautical miles from Mavinakurve.

ICGS Rajdoot, that was on patrol off the Karnataka and Goa coasts, and was diverted to the site of the incident on receipt of information, said DIG S S Dasila, commander, Coast Guard Karnataka. On arrival at the spot, the technical team of ICGS Rajdoot went on board the fishing boat and provided technical support to the crew. However, the engine could not be started.

Noting that all crew on board the fishing boat were safe, Dasila said Coast Guard requested Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) Pavan Sutta that was carrying out fishing activities in the vicinity, for towing assistance. IFB SDY too, that was in the area, also assisted the Coast Guard, Dasila said, adding the fishing boat was towed and taken to Bhatkal.

Thanking the respective crews of IFB Pavan Sutta and IFB SDY for their assistance, Dasila said such selfless acts by fishermen in reaching out to their brethren in distress will free up the Coast Guard in carrying out more important patrolling duties off the Karnataka coast. “We will be on hand for any search and rescue operations and fishermen can count on us for the same,” he said.
