Karwar: The dharna against the Sagarmala project which has been going on in Karwar for the last 12 days will be concluded on Saturday with the Karnataka High Court ordering a stay on the second stage Sagarmala works on Thursday.

The stay order will facilitate fish sellers to open the fish market on Sunday. Fishermen leader Raju Tandel said that the fish market will open as usual from Sunday but they will continue their opposition till the government drops the project completely.

He informed that the petitioner’s counsel Murthy D Naik and Supreme Court advocate Devdutt Kamat will extend their support to the project in Karwar on Saturday.

Even on Friday, students of Divekar College and Government Arts & Science College and Taluk Sunni Association office-bearers extended support to the fishermen and their protest.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Satish Sail said, “The protest by fishermen and people of the taluk against the Karwar commercial port extension project has received a shot in the arm. It is a welcoming development.”

Speaking at a press conference in Karwar on Friday, Sail said that the fishermen had not invited him to take part in their protest but he voluntarily supported them for the protection of the beach of Karwar and for the welfare of fishermen.
