Bengaluru: The high court has passed an interim order restraining the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) from widening the national highway 4-A falling under the core forest area within the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttara Kannada district.

A division bench headed by chief justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka passed this order after noticing that there was no clarity over the validity as well as continued existence of environmental clearance(EC) for undertaking the project.

Actor and environmentalist Suresh Heblikar and others have filed this PIL complaining about large scale cutting of trees to widen the road connecting Khanapura with Londa.

Apart from citing media reports regarding felling of about of 22,000 trees to widen the road, the petitioners have also contended that the 14-km stretch in question is a thick forest and comes under Dandeli elephant reserve and is home to elephants, tigers, leopards, black panthers and king cobras.
