Bengaluru: Ahead of Karnataka bypolls, the Congress and BJP are fiercely attacking each other with Congress calling PM Narendra Modi illiterate. The BJP retaliated by saying that the PM did not smoke cigarettes with any woman and dance in a bar.

"Congress built schools but Modi never went to study. Congress even set up schemes for adults to learn, Modi didn't learn there too. Even though begging is prohibited, people who are lazy have made the country’s people beggars. The country is suffering because of #angoothachhaapmodi," Karnataka Congress said in the tweet.

In response, BJP called the tweet unpardonable and termed it as a personal attack on the Prime Minister of India.

BJP's Karnataka spokesperson Malavika Avinash said, "Only the Congress can stoop so low" and added that the comment was not even worth responding to.

Karnataka BJP also said that the PM is different from Congress leaders because he has not lit any woman's cigarette and danced in the bar.

"Yes, your leaders are different from our Prime Minister. The Prime Minister did not lit another woman's cigarette. Didn't dance in the bar. Is not implicated in a drug trafficking case. Lived a life dedicated to the country, not to his family," the party said.

However, state Congress spokesperson Lavanya Ballal admitted that the tone of the tweet was "unfortunate" and said an inquiry would be conducted into the matter.
