Coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi tally 189 new Covid-19 cases

MANGALURU/UDUPI: A fresh spurt of 167 positive cases catapulted Dakshina Kannada(DK) to third place in total Covid-19 positive cases in Karnataka with 1,701 cases behind Bengaluru Urban (13,882) and Kalaburagi (1,901) on Thursday. Neighbouring Udupi with 22 new cases for the day saw its tally of positive cases go up to 1442. Two more Covid19 fatalities in DK took the death toll in this coastal district to 30 including five victims from outside the district.

The spurt of 167 cases in DK district was driven by 64 primary contacts turning positive, 42 of them were diagnosed with influenza like illness (ILI), source of how 38 others contracted the virus is being traced, 13 pre-surgery samples tested positive, six are cases of severe acute respiratory infection, three on account of international travel history and one due to inter-district travel history from Bengaluru, deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said.

The two Covid-19 deaths that DK reported on the day included a 62-year-old male from Bhatkal, who was diagnosed with SARI and admitted to a private hospital in the city for treatment. He died on Tuesday and his reports came in positive on Thursday. The second victim was a 49-year-old resident of Mangaluru with liver ailment, pneumonia, admitted to ICU of district Wenlock Hospital, designated Covid-a19 hospital and died late on Wednesday.

In all, seven patients were discharged from both Wenlock Hospital and other private hospitals in the district, taking the total of those discharged after treatment to 702. The incidence of new cases meant that the percentage of positive cases to the total population of the district crept up to 0.08 (0.07 on Wednesday) and took the number of active cases to 977. Seven patients are undergoing treatment at the ICU in Wenlock Hospital, Sindhu said.

 

The 22 cases that Udupi reported included 12 cases where people with inter-district travel contracted the virus, source of how six got infected is being traced, one patient had an inter-state travel history and three are primary contacts, deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha, said. Udupi presently has 223 active cases and has discharged 1217 patients after treatment. The district has also recorded three Covid19 deaths as on date, DC said.
