Hubballi: Hitting back at Karnataka Congress for calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi "an illiterate", the BJP on Tuesday went a step further calling Rahul Gandhi a "drug addict and a drug peddler".

"You see your story first, your national president is on bail. Your national vice president is on bail. He should have been in jail. I am not saying, the court gave them bail. Even your state president is on bail. What are you talking about? Who is your national president? G-23 people say Sonia Gandhi is not our president. Sonia Gandhi says she is the president. Another group says Rahul Gandhi is the president of the party.

"Who is Rahul Gandhi? He is a drug addict and a drug peddler. I am not saying. It was reported in newspapers. You have given power to those who do not even know how to run the Congress party. So, what will they run the country with," State BJP President Nalin Kumar Kateel said here.

These comments follow the unparliamentary comments made by Karnataka Congress on Monday, calling Modi "an illiterate and a beggar".

In retaliation, BJP defended the PM saying Modi did not smoke cigarettes with any woman and dance in a bar like Congress leaders.

After Karnataka Congress was trolled on social media, it expressed regret and withdrew the comments against PM Modi.

Reacting to Kateel's remarks, former KPCC President Dinesh Gundu Rao said: "It shows his ignorance and it is shocking that anybody can speak like this.

"The only solution for this is the BJP should reprimand and sack him, because he is speaking against a family member who has given their life to the country," he said.

"This is the culture of the BJP. They do not have respect for others' religion, language and culture. They just want to impose their views, and whoever is against them they are condemned. They are lynched. they are beaten up. They are targeted and in every way they go after them," Rao said.

"What is Modi and Amit Shah doing about people like Basangouda Patil Yatnal, CT Ravi, Kateel and Anantkumar Hegde, who are trying to create disturbance by making irrelevant statements," he said.

KPCC President DK Shivakumar hoped BJP will apologise for their state president’s abusive and unparliamentary remarks against Rahul Gandhi.

"Yesterday I said I believe we should be civil and respectful in politics, even to our opponents. I hope the BJP agrees with me, and will apologise for their state president’s abusive and unparliamentary remarks against Shri Rahul Gandhi," he tweeted.

This is not the first time that the BJP has linked Rahul Gandhi to drugs.

In 2016, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had claimed that Rahul Gandhi was allegedly caught by Federal Bureau of Investigation officials for holding USD 1.60 lakh and white powder in the US in 2001.

He had also claimed then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on Sonia Gandhi's request, rang up the then US President George Bush and got Rahul Gandhi released.
