Karwar: Alleging that the officers of Karwar City Municipal Council (CMC) were trying to cheat fishermen in the fish market construction issue, hundreds of fishermen and fisherwomen staged a protest in front of the deputy commissioner's office in Karwar on Monday.

Led by Congress leader Satish Sail, the fishermen raised slogans against the CMC officials and Assistant Executive engineer R P Naik of the Urban Development Cell.

Cases of a few stalls located at the place where the new fish market is coming up are in the court. This has hindered the fish market work. To address the issue, a meeting presided over Additional Deputy Commissioner Nagaraj Singrer was held recently. At the meeting, a letter was shown to the fishermen. The letter said that the fisherwomen would be allowed to sit in the entire fish market. But, the affidavit submitted by the CMC in the court says that only half of the building will be given to fisherwomen whereas the remaining place will have commercial shops. This is unfair, the protesters said.

Assistant Executive engineer R P Naik of the Urban Development Cell, who arrived at the spot, said that the issue was related to the CMC. The CMC executive engineer Mohanraj assured of holding a meeting where the issue can be discussed.

Projects opposed

Meanwhile, fisherwomen also staged another protest by keeping the fish market closed demanding to drop the second phase of expansion of Baithkhol commercial port and construction of the sea wall. They said that the project will not only harm the beach but will also affect the fishermen families. Later, they submitted a memorandum in this regard.
