Fire destroys areca plantation worth Rs 15 lakh

Sirsi: Areca plantation over one-and-half acres was charred at Karadikai village in Sirsi taluk on Tuesday after a dried coconut branch fell on a live wire. The fire then spread to entire plantation and property worth more than Rs 15 lakh was destroyed.

The plantation belonged to Subbaraya Hegde and Manjunath Hegde.

More than 700 areca trees have been destroyed in the fire. Along with areca the they have also lost pepper, cardamom, coconut, Agarwood and water pipes has been destroyed.

The local who noticed the fire tried to douse it, but could not bring the fire under the control till late in the night. The owners and villagers have been demanding the revenue officials to visit the spot and conduct a survey and provide compensation to them.
