Mangaluru: Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council and MLC B K Hariprasad has urged the government to come to the help of families that have lost their properties in the natural calamities in the state.

Speaking after visiting flood and sea erosion-affected areas in Gurupura, Mugerkudru in Adyapadi, Meenakaliya and various places in Ullal on Tuesday, he said that the government should provide compensation to the affected families.

Steps should be taken to provide resettlement for all those who lost their houses. The compensation distributed is meagre, he said.

The MLC also visited a road that was washed away in the sea erosion at Meenakaliya.

The residents brought to his notice several houses that are facing threat from sea erosion in Meenakaliya, Battappady, Ullal and other areas.

He said that two persons had lost their lives and several houses were damaged during rains at Mulur near Gurupura two years ago.

The government has only paid compensation to the tragedy-hit families. No steps were taken to rebuild the houses, he added.

People of Adyapadi and Mugerkudru, narrating their problems, said that the area gets artificial floods due to the construction of a dam at Maravoor. Acres of farmland get inundated.

Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly U T Khader, former MLA B A Mohiuddin Bava, Congress leaders Prathibha Kulai and Shashidhar Hegde and others were present.
