Mangaluru: Minister for Fisheries, Ports and Inland Water Transport S Angara promised to convene a meeting with officials from fisheries department and representatives of fishermen organisations in order to find permanent solution to the problems faced by fishermen in Bunder.

There are 1,300 traditional and 1,200 mechanised boats in the old port. But the space available at jetty is enough to tether 1,500 boats. Thus the congestion is acting as a big hindrance to fishing activities. Keeping the growth of Bunder port in mind, a comprehensive project would be submitted to government.

Speaking after inaugurating the one-day workshop on Fish Farmers’ Producer Organisations at Matsyagandhi convention hall here, on Tuesday, Angara said 29,071 litres of Diesel were disbursed to fishermen boats. A subsidy amount of Rs 34.05 crore was transferred to the accounts of 1,019 beneficiaries. An amount of Rs 2.97 crore was released for development of roads under fisheries department, he added.

MLA D Vedavyas Kamath stressed on the need to carry out dredging works. Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC) Chairman Nithin Kumar, MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty, Corporator Abdul Lathif, Port department Joint Director Thippeswamy, Fisheries department Director A Ramachari and District Fisheries department Deputy Director P Parshwanath were also present.
