Bengaluru: On the auspicious day of Swarna Gowri Pooja, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai switched on the Unipole High-Mast Floodlight Towers at a unique function at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday night.

According to KSCA release issued here on Friday, as the newly installed lights came on and the darkness vanished, the CM went down to the wicket and batted and fended off a few deliveries after addressing the select gathering.

The CM regaled the audience as he recalled his days with cricketers like G. R. Vishwanath and his tenure as the Chairman of the Dharwad Zone from 1998 to 2001.

“I am truly delighted to inaugurate this Unipole Floodlighting facility. I have witnessed the growth of the Chinnaswamy Stadium from 1974 onwards when the first Test match between India and the West Indies was played.

Temporary galleries were constructed with casuarina poles. We had a packed crowd and I was in the stands watching the match as a spectator. I recall those fiery West Indian pace bowlers with their long run-up. Roger Binny, now the KSCA President, took the crucial wicket of skipper Clive Lloyd and almost helped India win. Binny is still supremely fit. His contribution to Karnataka and Indian cricket is immense. His son Stuart also did very well and kept up Karnataka's rich cricketing tradition,” Bommai added.

“Not just cricket, Karnataka has been in the forefront in many other respects as well. More importantly, they have developed infrastructure in all districts of the state. A Stadium will be commissioned in Hubli shortly. I want the KSCA to work and get an International ODI or T20I match allotted to Hubblli so that people will have the opportunity of watching a big match,” the CM added.

“My congratulations to all the past office-bearers of the KSCA for making Karnataka a go-to association which has all the best of modern amenities needed for international cricket.

The present office-bearers too have worked hard to have fresh initiatives making it the best association in the country. Santosh Menon, an opening batsman, opened the innings well here today. Vinay Mruthunyunjaya too is always looking for improvement. I am proud to be associated with the KSCA over the years. I can assure you I and my government will go the extra mile to make it better,” Bommai concluded.

President Roger Binny welcomed the gathering while Santosh Menon, the Secretary, provided details of KSCA’s initiatives to provide a near-perfect platform for players to excel while Vinay Mruthunyunjaya, the Treasurer, apprised the CM of the social initiatives undertaken by the KSCA from time to time.
