49 people were killed while 48 others were injured when gunmen stormed two local mosques in New Zealand’s city of Christchurch today, 15 March 2019. The attack was carried out on Friday, a day when Muslims around the world congregate to pray collectively at their local Mosques in the afternoon. Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern stated that 4 people have been arrested. “There is no place in New Zealand for such acts of extreme and unprecedented violence, which it is clear this act was. It is clear this is one of New Zealand's darkest days” She said. She also added that the attack was well planned in advance.

Terrorist live-streamed the attack on Facebook

One of the attackers even streamed the attack live on Facebook, with footage recorded from a helmet mounted camera. The video has been taken down by Facebook but journalists who watched it confirmed its authenticity and described it as shocking and mind numbing, advising people not to watch it as it was very disturbing.

Attacker was Extremist Right Wing Australian

According to news reports, a 28 year old man who claimed responsibility for the attack stated that he came to New Zealand to plan and carry out the attack. He is said to have anti-Muslim and anti-migrant extremist views. Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed that one of the attackers was Australian. He said that the attack was carried out by "an extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist" who was an Australian-born citizen.

Dead bodies everywhere in the mosques

Witnesses at Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Mosque described the attack in shocking details, saying that the attacker who was dressed in black entered the Mosque ‘Al Noor’ and started firing at everyone. Women and children were shot point blank. Many who were injured due to initially fired bullets were killed when the attacker took aim and fired at them from point blank range.

Grief and support is pouring for the people of New Zealand who lost their lives in the terror attack. Many Muslim commentators have said the attack was a proof of rising Islamophobia and racism directed against Muslims and migrants around the world. “What started with the media showing Muslims and migrants as dangerous is now showing its effect. Those who were not ready to take Islamophobia seriously should look at what an extremist right winger has done in New Zealand.
