Ambulance carrying patient from Honnavar to Manipal crashes into Shiroor toll plaza; 4 dead, 3 injured

Bhatkal: A speeding ambulance driver lost his control over the vehicle and rammed it into the toll plaza at Shiroor National Highway, 7 km away from Bhatkal here on Wednesday. Four persons including the patient on the ambulance were killed and three persons including driver have been reported injured. The ambulance was carrying a patient from Honnavar to Manipal hospital.

The deceased has been identified as Lokesh Naik, his wife Geeta Lokesh Naik, his relatives Gajanand Naik and Manjunath Naik. All are said to be the residents of Hadeenbal in Honnavar. The injured are identified as Ambulance driver Roshan Rodrigues, Ganesh and Sashanth.

According to the sources, Gajanand Naik was taken to a private hospital in Honnaver by his relatives following his illness. After initial check up, he was boarded in the hospital ambulance and was being taken to Manipal hospital, during which ambulance lost control at Shiroor toll plaza crashing into a pole and toppled on a toll plaza staff.

It is learnt, soon after the accident, seven persons were injured and were shifted to Kundapur hospital, among whom four succumbed to thier injuries.

Ambulance driver, Roshan Rodrigues, who is seriously injured has been admitted to Kundapur hospital. Toll plaza staff, on whom the ambulance overturned is also amongst the injured.

A case has been registered at Byndoor police station.
