Why are govt benefits not reaching farmers?: Minister

Karwar: Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Krishna Byre Gouda took officials of horticulture department to task for not providing any facilities to the horticulture farmers with 1,300 acres of land in the district.

The minister accused the officials of not providing any benefit to these farmers under the National Horticulture Mission (NHM), during a review meeting of various department he chaired in Karwar on Wednesday. Prove to me that none of these farmers are not interested in getting benefits under the NHM, he said.

He was particularly angry with Horticulture Department office Shashikant.

The minister asked Shashikant as how many farmers benefited from the various schemes of the department.

For which, the officer said every year the department is extending the benefits to farmers of nearly 1,000 hectares.

Under the MGNREGS 317 acres have been covered and under NHM 200 hectares, while under composite horticulture scheme 300 acres were covered, he said.

Fact or fiction

The minister, who was upset with the details provided by the officer, said “do you work based on the facts or fiction?”.

Deputy Commissioner S S Nakul who intervened said currently you are providing benefits to only those farmers who are coming to your office. “Why are you not informing other farmers and creating awareness among others?,” he asked and said “what you are doing is not right.”

The State government provides Rs 19,000 for constructing of cattle shed. There are more than 90,000 farmers who are raring cattle in district out of which only 700 have opted for the funds.

The Animal Husbandry Department is not interested in disbursing or claiming the money, he said and added that it is hard to believe that farmers are not interested in this scheme.

MLA Shivaram Hebbar, Dinakar Shetty. Roopali Naik, Sunil Naik, Zilla Panchayat President Jayashri Moger, Vice President Santosh Renake, and other officers of various departments were present in the meeting.
