Karwar: The long-pending demand for starting an upgraded train between Shirwad railway station near Karwar and Pernem in Goa has ultimately been fulfilled. Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Ananth Kumar Hegde flagged off the upgraded train on Tuesday.

This is a diesel-electrical multiple unit (DEMU) train and earlier it had only three bogies. Now, it has eight bogies with 84 seats in each bogie. The train is having a modern touch with transparent window panes for better light, more space between seats and more handles for those passengers who are travelling standing.

“Having an engine of 1,600 HP, it is a rapid transit train with technology to slow down the speed and increase it in the least possible time. All the bogies have bio-toilets”, said Konkan Railway Corporation Public Relations Officer L K Verma.

Training centre;

Speaking at the formal inaugural programme, Minister Hegde said that local youths must be appointed to various posts in the Railway Department. There are plans to set up a skill development training centre in Karwar for youths to get jobs in Railways. “We have discussed the matter with Konkan Railway Chief Managing Director”, he said.

“There is a demand to declare Gokarna railway station as a heritage station. But only those railway stations which are too old can be included in this list and Gokarna station was constructed just 10 to 15 years back”, he said.

MLA Roopali Naik said that every day, around 1,000 people travel to Goa for jobs from Karwar. The upgraded train will help them to travel to Goa on daily basis. “Demand to upgrade this train was placed before authorities many times when the Congress government was in power. Now, this demand has been fulfilled as the railway minister responded positively”, she added.

Deputy Commissioner S S Nakul, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Roshan, Taluk Panchayat President Pramila Naik and Shirwad Gram Panchayat President Ganga were present on the occasion.

Train timing:

The train will leave Karwar at 6:00 am every day and reach Pernem in Goa at 9:30 am covering a distance of 110 km. On the return journey, it will leave Pernem at 9:40 am and reach Karwar at 12:30 noon.

The train will once again start from Karwar at 1:00 pm and reach Pernem at 4:30 pm. From there, it will leave at 5:30 pm and reach Karwar at 8:30 pm. The cost of per ticket would be Rs 35, railway officers said.
