Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada in-charge Minister U.T. Khader on Wednesday said the government will soon approve the proposal to establish a truck terminal in the vicinity of Baikampady Industrial Area in Mangaluru. Interacting with members of the Kanara Small Industries Association (KSIA) after receiving felicitations here, Mr. Khader said the required land is already identified and further process is on.

He was responding to KSIA president Gaurav Hegde’s demand for a terminal, who said hundreds of trucks swarm Industrial Area’s roads as the rea is located amidst the industrial hub of the region. Acknowledging the problem, Mr. Khader said the government is on the job and assured that a terminal would soon be established in the city.

Responding to another demand of the Association that industrial workers be provided affordable housing, Mr. Khader said the government is working on the proposal and it soon would be a reality.

The Minister said a meeting would soon be held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office to provide impetus for industrial growth in the district.

He also promised to consider the demand to open Indira Canteen in the Industrial Area, as demanded by the association for workers.

Mr. Hegde urged the Minister to expedite the process of repossession of land allotted to Jaiprakash Engineering and Steel Industries at Baikampady. While 160 acres allotted to the Coast Guard has been released by the court, 383 acres of land is available for allotment to industries, he said. Of the available land, 100 acres may be earmarked for small industries as industrial plots, 50 acres for hardware park, 48 acres for logistics park, 35 acres for low cost housing for industrial workers, 20 acres for international exhibition centre, 10 acres for common effluent treatment plant and 125 acres for green belt/ buffer zone and other infrastructure.

The association also urged Mr. Khader to expedite the proposal for plastic park at Ganjimutt, formation of Baikampady Industrial Area Township Authority, reconstruction of storm-water drains in the Area, multi-level industrial complex, upgradation of road infrastructure in the Area and establishing a new industrial area.
