Gokarna: The Public Works Department has had to take the help of the police in order to carry out the road development works, in Gokarna, on Wednesday, following opposition to the work by some Gram Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat members.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had recently inaugurated several works and had dedicated several completed works during his visit to Kumta.

The road repair and development work here, being undertaken at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore, was one among them. The Public Wworks Department had taken up the work two days ago.

Police complaint

However, the department encountered opposition when the work on the stretch of road from Primary Health Centre to Central Bus stand was to be taken up.

Eventually, the work carried out after taking the help of the police under their protection.

Public Works Department Engineer Shashikanth made it clear that the work was taken up after the majority of Gram Panchayat members had supported the proposal.

“The road work already sanctioned cannot be stopped now. A police complaint would be lodged against those who try to disrupt the work.”

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders denied any role in opposing ongoing works. Party leader Manjunath Jannu BJP had always supported the development works.
