Mangaluru: The District Congress Committee took out a protest from Ambedkar Circle to the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Tuesday against alleged corruption in Rafale deal.

The protesters demanded a high-level probe into the deal. The rally passed through Hampankatte, A B Shetty Circle and reached the DC’s office. The protesters raised slogans against the NDA government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP.

They demanded an answer on why there was a change in the original deal and an increase in the cost of purchase.

Former minister B Ramanath Rai said, “The agreement made by the UPA government on Rafale fighter aircraft purchase was changed by the NDA government. Why did PM Modi reduce the number of fighter aircraft required for Indian Air Force from 126 to 36? the state-owned HAL, which was involved in the original deal, kept away in the fresh deal? Why was the offset contracts Reliance that has zero experience in aircraft building?”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s move has only helped Reliance Defence Ltd. The deal is an attempt to loot the resources of the country, he charged.

He said BJP is engaged in stating a bundle of lies. When Rajiv Gandhi was the prime minister, the BJP levelled false allegations of corruption in Bofors arms deal. But later, the investigation agencies gave a clean chit to Rajiv Gandhi. Now, the BJP is silent on corruption charges to the tune of Rs 60,000 crore in Rafale deal, he claimed.

Former MLA J R Lobo said, “During the UPA tenure, the rate per aircraft was fixed at Rs 550 crore. But the NDA government, led by Modi, has increased it to Rs 1,600 crore per aircraft. As a result, a sum of Rs 60,000 crore loss has been incurred to the government. The probe on Rafale deal will prove costly for the NDA government. The Congress will not rest till BJP government provides answers on Rafale deal.”

Former MLA Mohiuddin Bava charged, “The original deal was changed to help the agents of Prime Minister Modi. As a result, Modi toured to France. The NDA government is engaged in looting the taxpayers’ money.”

DCC President and MLC K Harish Kumar, KPCC General Secretary P V Mohan, former mayor Kavitha Sanil and others were present.
