Honnavar (Uttara Kannada) DHNS: A day before Eid Milad, Honnavar town on Friday witnessed comunal violence over temporary installation of the replica of the Prophet’s tomb. Five people were injured in the clash.

As a precautionary measure, the police have taken over 25 people into custody and deployed additional forces at sensitive areas. Situation continues to be tense, though it is under control, said the police.

Kamalakar Naik, who sustained head injuries, is being treated at a hospital. His condition  is stated to be serious, but he is out of danger, they said.

A peace committee meeting organised by the police recently had adopted a resolution against temporary installation of the replica of the Prophet’s tomb within 20 metres radius of Chandavar Circle.

However, on Friday, some youths tried to unfurl a green flag and create a replica of the tomb at the Circle. As the news spread, another group rushed there and  installed a pole with a saffron flag, which led to tension. Soon, a large number of people gathered at the spot. The situation went out of control after local BJP leader Suraj Naik came there and claimed that a few miscreants had stoned his car at Sultankere. Sensing danger, the police directed people to move away from the circle. As the crowd did not respond, the police caned them.
