Kumta: Under the aegis of Kumta Taluk Boat Association, hundreds of fishermen staged a protest in the town on Wednesday, urging the government not to re-appoint Vasanth Hegde, as assistant director of fisheries at Tadadi Port in Gokarna of Kumta taluk.

Submitting a memorandum in this regard to the joint director of fisheries, Udupi through the District Fisheries Department director P Nagaraj, Association president Nagraj Harikanthra claimed that Vasanth Hegde, who was the assistant director earlier had created many problems to the fishermen of this region.

He had failed to keep the interest of fishermen. He had tortured the fishermen in terms to make his own profits. There was a rift in his administration, after he violated the government rules while giving the contract of the port to others, he accused.

After staging series of protests, he was transferred to other place. However, the government has re-appointed him to the Tadadi port. Hence, the fishermen of this region demanded the government not to re-appoint him to the Tadadi port.

Former president of association Umakanth Hoskatta, Arvind Hoskatta and nearly 500 fishermen took part in the protest.
